Violet Oakley

1) Violet Oakley, born on June 10, 1874 to February 25, 1961 (aged 86) in Jersey City, New Jersey, was an American artist.

2) She was born into a family of artists. In 1892, she studied at the Art Students League of New York with James Carroll Beckwith and Irving R. Wiles. A year later, she studied in England & France.

3) She had early success as a popular illustrator for The Century Magazine, Collier’s Weekly, St. Nicholas Magazine, and Woman’s Home Companion. The style of her art reflects English Pre-Raphaelites.

4) She was the first American woman to receive a public mural commission. She excelled at murals & stained glass designs that addressed themes from history and literature in Renaissance-revival styles.

5) She painted a series of 43 murals in the Pennsylvania State Capitol Building in Harrisburg for the Governors Grand Reception Room, the Senate and the Supreme Court.
