Fitz Henry Lane

1) Fitz Henry Lane, (born Nathaniel Rogers Lane), born in Gloucester, Massachusetts on December 19, 1804 to August 14, 1865 (aged 60), was an American painter and printmaker of Luminism.

2) His father was a sail-maker. From the time of his birth, Lane was exposed to the sea and maritime life, a factor that obviously had a great impact on his later choice of subject matter.

3) It is believed he became an artist because at the age of eighteen months, he consumed a poisonous weed (jimsonweed) that caused the paralysis of the legs. He became a lifelong handicap.

4) Although many aspects of his life was ambiguous, a few things are certain. Lane “showed in boyhood a talent for drawing and painting; but received no instruction in the rules till he went to Boston.”
