1) Mercedes Matter, born in New York, New York on 1913 to December 4, 2001 (aged 87 to 88), was an American painter, draughtswoman, and writer.

2) Her father was the American modernist painter Arthur Beecher Carles who had studied with Henri Matisse. She first painted under his supervision at age 6 & worked with him in the French countryside.

3) Her primary education was art history in Italy. Subsequent studies included at Bennett College in Millbrook, NY with sculptor Lu Duble, & in NYC with Maurice Sterne, Alex Archipenko, & Han Hofmann.

4) In the late 1930s, she was an original member of the American Abstract Artists. She also worked for the Works Progress Administration and with Fernand Leger, a painter, sculptor, & filmmaker.

5) In 1953, she taught at the University of the Arts for 10 years, & then at the Pratt Institute for 10 years. In 1964, she founded the New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting, and Sculpture.
