1) Joan Brown, born in San Francisco, California on February 13, 1938 to October 26, 1990 (aged 52), was an American figurative painter who lived and worked in Northern California.

2) She studied at the California School of Fine Arts (now San Francisco Art Institute), graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1959 and a Master of Arts in 1960.

3) Her paintings were directly related to events that happened in her life & her interests. In 1960, at the age of 22, she had her first New York City exhibition of her abstract expressionist paintings.

4) She achieved prominence with a style of figurative painting that combined bright color, sometimes cartoonish drawing, & personal symbolism. As she matured, she switched to figurative imagery.

5) Later on, she became increasingly interested in spirituality and New Age ideas. She travelled all over the world and produced paintings from different cultures and experiences.
